PROJECTS FOR THE 2013 /2014 ACADEMIC YEAR
AS ART AND SCHOOL
Primary School
The Art and School project consists of three two-hour meetings offered to primary schools, grades 2 to 5. During the school year, the class will be accompanied on a voyage of discovery on how to interpret contemporary works of art. The meetings and workshops vary from year to year and are specifically created and designed for children paying special attention to the various perspectives that are needed to understand and admire contemporary art.
GUIDED TOURS OF THE TEMPORARY EXHIBITION
Schools of all levels
Schools are offered guided tours of the Villa Croce Museum held by members of the Education Department specially tailored to the students’ age, knowledge and level. Through dialogue and proactive student participation, the guide will point out the main threads running through the works on exhibit and offer keys of interpretation. The tour takes approximately 90 minutes.
SCULPTURE
Primary School, grades 3 – 5
Middle school, grade 1 (age 11 -12 )
Sculpting is the technique that makes it possible to represent the outside world through the use of materials which, shaped and formed, can express the sculptor’s “artistic intent”.
The workshop includes a journey through the long history of sculpture, ending with contemporary experimentation of different materials and solutions. The class will take part in a hands-on activity which will help them discover the endless communicative possibilities of the contemporary sculptural means. The workshop is held at Villa Croce and lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
MM MY MUSEUM
Middle school
The project name refers to the possibility of building “one’s own” museum. After visiting the museum and its exhibits and having reflected on the staging and layout of the exhibition, participants are invited to build a model museum room. The 3-dimensional space (created by cutting 3 sides of a box) is made to look like a real museum area by gluing special paper with a pattern similar to the marble flooring of Villa Croce onto the bottom/floor. Students can then fill the space with the art works they like, following whatever theme they choose. At the end of this experience, all the models are joined together forming a 3-dimensional model of a collective museum.
This workshop includes 3 two-hour meetings: 1 at Villa Croce Museum and 2 either at school or at the museum.
OCA rte
Primary School, grades 4 – 5
The structure of the project offered by the Education Department at the Villa Croce Museum is based on the relationship that some 20th artists saw between art and play. Starting with an analysis of the works of some artists (Kaprow, Bravo, Rubbi etc.), this project invites participants to create a big “gioco dell’Oca” (an Italian board game similar to Snakes and Ladders). Using paper as a base and using various techniques and styles, participants are encouraged to create the fields and scoreboard of this popular game and then play it together.
The room (of a school), the participants (one or more school classes) and the active participation in the game constitute the key elements of this activity designed to help students understand that contemporary art seeks to create relationships, define concepts and create new languages; in this case, its expression in play highlights these criteria in the clearest way possible.
The project can be entirely carried out at school. Please keep in mind that there must be enough space to be able to play the game with one or two classes. The graphic production involves only one class, but more classes should participate in playing the game. The workshop includes three sessions, each lasting approximately 3 and a half hours.
NATURAL MATERIALS FROM NATURE TO ART
Primary School
Middle School, grade 1 (age 11-12)
The workshop lasts approximately 2 hours and a half and can be held at Villa Croce or at school.
Students will create an informal composition that does not take its cue from traditional colours and techniques, but is inspired by the variety and diversity of the natural materials one can find in a garden. The work is a journey half way between drawing and assembling. The workshop may also include the creation of graphic elements to be added to the pre-existing gardens.
